Can Civility Save Us?

Incivility is growing nationwide.  What effect is this having on your workplace?

PROGRAM

What's the right response to growing incivility and troubling political trends? What role should civil discourse play to bring change or make peace; in the world and in your workplace?

Come hear public policy expert Craig Freshley share his views on these questions and join a discussion with your peers. Craig Freshley will explain how civility is eroding in America and how Make Shift Coffee House is responding.

Learning Goals:

  • Understand current national trends regarding civility
  • Understand the Make Shift Coffee House model for understanding each other's political views
  • Understand specific techniques and attitudes for participating in civil conversation

OUR PRESENTER

Craig Freshley

After the 2016 presidential election Craig Freshley was inspired to do something to help his country and his community. He saw that we were politically divided and he saw that we were being more and more mean to each other. He invented something called a Make Shift Coffee House and as a volunteer he has organized and facilitated 27 of them.

Yet way before the Make Shift Coffee House idea came along Craig has been helping groups get along. For 15 years he has been a professional meeting facilitator and he has a company called Good Group Decisions. Craig has facilitated over 3,000 meetings for nonprofits, community groups, and governments. He has written a book called The Wisdom of Group Decisions and has published over 150 how-to videos, 160 one-page tips, and 25 handouts - all about group dynamics and all available for free.

Craig has a Master's Degree in Public Policy and has worked for the Maine state government and the Maine Development Foundation.
