Just tell me how to do it: Using cognitive stage development theory to understand learners' differences (and what to do about it!)
Why are some learners highly self-directed, while others look to authorities to tell them what to do and how to do it? Why do some expect trainers to direct the learning process, while others prefer a more facilitative or coaching approach?
In this interactive workshop, we will discuss the role that cognitive stage development plays in how people approach learning. We will examine the four stages of cognitive development, and how each impacts how learners experience the learning process. Using this information, we will discuss strategies and tools that we can use to customize the training process for learners at each stage of development.

About Our Presenter:
Leigh G. Mundhenk, PhD, is Associate Professor and Director of Field Experiences at the University of Southern Maine at Lewiston- Auburn College, where she has taught career development courses and run the internship program for 12 years. Prior to that she taught graduate courses in business and counseling, and co-directed the Center for Continuing Education.
Leigh is also an Organizational and Personal Development Consultant, specializing in career development. Her earlier work experience includes eighteen years with Johnson & Johnson, where she held various managerial positions in sales, marketing, and training. Leigh published numerous training designs for the McGraw-Hill Sourcebook, as well as the ASTD/ Active Training Team and Organizational Development and Training and Performance Sourcebooks, edited by Mel Silberman PhD, with whom she studied and regarded as her mentor.
Prior to moving to Maine, Leigh was actively involved as a board member in the Philadelphia chapter of ASTD and was active in the Maine chapter for several years. Leigh holds a BS in Psychology from Duke University, an MS in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Psycho-educational Processes from Temple University.
